MS Word permits the documents to be sent as e-mail attachments to other users. Users can insert any number of documents as attachments in their e-mail messages. Word uses binary file format till Word 2003 and adds .doc extension to its files. The attachment goes in the same format on the network.
But sometimes, the Word document that has been sent as an e-mail attachment may fail to open with the following error message:
“The document name or path is invalid.”
These are the symptoms that the document is corrupt and needs Word Repair. Either you open it directly or try to open after saving it on the hard disk; the problem appears with same nature.
Cause
The mentioned behavior which shows that the word document is corrupt can be attributed to the way in which the mail servers deal with the format of Word documents. Mail servers filter out the untrustworthy information and hence may not consider document’s binary file format for good and may change this information in a way that it results into document corruption.
Solution
The issue lies in the format of Word documents, which is not taken as worth by mail servers. So, if possible, the attachment can be asked in different format from the sender. The sender can send the same attachment in RTF or Zip format.
On the other hand, if resending is not possible then the document saved on hard disk can be repaired. This is feasible through word recovery software which can scan and recover the corrupt word documents in any of the case.
